On June 14, NCPCA held an alley clean up and celebration to help some of our neighbors and to help beautify our neighborhood. With the help of over 27 volunteers NCPCA cleaned the alley between 26th/27th Ave. and Fillmore/Clayton St.; cleaned the yard of Georges Matthew and Della Donna Matthews; and cleaned the backyard and alley area of Mrs. Helen Washington. In addition to the above work on behalf of NCPCA, neighbors joined together to clean their own alleys.
NCPCA volunteers filled 75 bags of trash, and stacked mounds of vegetation, tree limbs, and other debris which were picked up the next Monday by Large Item Pick-Up trucks from Denver Waste Management.
On top of that, volunteers obtained an additional 17 surveys on economic development and demographics in North City Park to assist the effort being undertaken jointly by NCPCA and University of Colorado at Denver Planning Dept. students under the supervision of Dr. Pamela Wridt.
To help celebrate the occasion, a catered party was held and many NCPCA neighbors stopped by to join in the fun, food, and conversation, in addition to all the work that was accomplished. Thanks to all who participated, including: Davyd Smith and Christine Barton, Michelle DiGiacomo, Santos Bonilla, John Glasper, Anna Orton and Stafford Boyd, Riley and Gloria Jackson, George Journey and Michelle Bell, Stanley Jones, Magan Smith, Angela Lombard and Larry Hunt, Clara Morris and John Goodride (and their cleanup group of 4 others), Kathleen Casteel and Elder Brown, Georges Matthews and Della Donna Matthews, Harold Brewer, Al and Claudette Rue. Tracey Benjamin, Jacqueline Allen and her son, Aden ( along with two of his friends), Charlotte Goens, Chante McCrary, Justice Baxter, and many others not named. Special thanks are due to those who helped make this event a success by donating money or services to ensure the success of this event: The Denver Foundation Strengthening Neighborhoods Program (through a grant to NCPCA/UCD Students Survey Team, Inc.), Michelle Oddie, Graduate Student in the Planning Dept. at University of Colorado at Denver, Franks Food Mart (franks and water), Dennis Brooks of Brooks & Rucker Barbeque, Elder Brown (canopy), Chuck Gavin (canopy and chairs), and Becky White of Keep Denver Beautiful in Denver Waste Management (tools, gloves, and trash bags).
This year’s event was great. Let’s have an equal (or better) event in 2009. Thank you all.
